Allan Gray
Allan Gray is one of South Africa's largest independent investment management firms. I spent seven years there as Digital Creative Director, leading a team of six UI/UX designers.
The flagship project was a complete redesign of allangray.co.za — still in use today. The core challenge: serving fundamentally different audiences under one roof — direct investors, clients coming through financial advisors, and institutional investors — each with different needs and levels of financial literacy.
The process was heavily driven by user research — paper prototyping early on, then structured usability testing in an in-house lab we set up. Beyond UX, I was involved across the full production chain — video, photography, illustration, and working with Allan Gray's brand agency on content. On the technical side, I made key front-end technology decisions including adopting D3.js for charting and Bootstrap as the responsive framework.
I engaged regularly with C-suite stakeholders on design strategy and brand direction, and partnered with external agencies on the Allan Gray brand refresh.
